Mitsuya Seizaemon, a former feudal lord of a Tohoku clan, has bestowed the family fortune upon his son and gone to live out his days in retirement. Having spent his life working without a moment to think of his family, he now spends every day writing a journal without a care in the world. However, his retirement is dogged by a sense of severe isolation and loneliness. In his isolation, he finds himself caught up in a number of incidents by courtesy of an old town magistrate friend. His peaceful retirement is now disrupted by his involvement in solving these crimes.
